LEGION OF MERIT

Instituted on 20 July 1942 and is the Nations second highest award for Service or Achievement.

The award was developed to serve several distinct purposes. As the Nation became more deeply involved in World War Two, President Roosevelt wanted an award to Honour foreign military personnel and also an increasing need to recognise the United States Armed Forces, for a wide range of outstanding contributions.

Badge ‑ Ten pointed, gold rimmed, red bordered white enamel star, each point being tipped with a gold ball the end. Crossed arrows appear between the arms encircled by a green and gold wreath with a gold bow at the bottom. The centre blue disc carries thirteen stars which represent the thirteen original States. The reverse is enamelled and inscribed in gold, "United States of America", "Anmuit Coeptis", (He has favoured our undertakings) and " 1782 ", the date of the USA's founding of their first Military Award the Purple Heart.

Ribbon ‑ Maroon with a white stripe on each edge.

How to wear ‑ The Badge is hung around the neck suspended from a tailored riband.

VIP recipients ‑  HRH Prince Khalid bin Sultan Abdul Aziz, awarded the Commander.

The first award of the Commander class was to Brigadier General Amaro Soares Bittencourt of Brazil.
