LEGION OF HONOUR

France's Premier Decoration was established by Napoleon Bonaparte on May 19 1802, as an award to French citizens and foreigners for outstanding services in a Civilian or Military capacity on behalf of France.

Badge ‑ Ten pointed, gold rimmed, white enamel star with a gold ball on the tip of each point. A wreath of oak and laurels run between the arms of the cross. The centre disc portrays a female head with a wreath crown in a blue enamelled border containing the inscription, "Republique Francaise." The reverse disc portrays crossed French National Flags, surrounded by a blue enamel border, containing the inscription, "Honour et Patrie ". The whole is suspended from a green enamel wreath, half laurel and half oak.

Star ‑ Ten pointed multi‑rayed gold star and portrays a female head symbolising the French Republic. The disc above is surrounded by a border with the inscription, "Republique Francaise ", around the top and "Honneur et Patrie ", below.

Ribbon ‑ Red Moiré.

How to wear ‑ The Badge is attached to the bow of the Sash which is worn over the right shoulder. The Star is pinned onto the left breast.
